Dane and Bindy

I just wanted to give a shout out to two amazingly talented friends of mine; Dane Peterson and Belinda Peterson-Baggs. In 2005, Dane made history by being the first surfer to ever appear on the cover of The Surfer's Journal in a vertical photo. A few year later Dane got another cover shot on the same magazine, only this time he was behind the lens. This new cover shot is on newsstands now and is a photo Dane shot of his wife Belinda. Belinda's cover shot also made history. In 18 years, this is the first time The Journal has ever had a female on the cover. Great work guys.

Santa Barbara's on fire!

I came up to Santa Barbara for a few days. The waves have been fun, but this fire isn't that fun. I hope they get it under control soon.

Harbour Board Swap

It was a huge success. Tons of rad boards, great people, and free hamburgers and hotdogs. It's really neat that shops do these types of things for their community. Everyone had a blast.

Picaresque

Long-time friend/filmmaker (and not the other way around) Mikey DeTemple was in town this weekend for an appearance on Fuel TV's "The Daily Habit." He's promoting his new film entitled Picaresque. I got a chance to check it out and I think it looks really good. He will be showing it out this way after a grueling East Cost tour and a couple premiers in Japan later this month and next. Here's the trailer . . .

Elijah Wood

So I've finished shaping my alaia and am now on the oiling part. I'm using tung oil which should protect it and make it last forever. One coat down, four more to go . . .

Wood is good

My good friend Ben works for the Wegener brothers and was able to pick up a couple paulownia wood blanks for me. I'm going to shape an alaia and see how it goes. This is what they look like now . . .

SALSA SURF CONTEST

I volunteered to judge a really neat surf contest on Saturday. The SALSA (Surfers Against Lou Gehrig's Disease Surfing Alliance) contest, went down on the South Side of the Huntington Beach Pier. The waves were really fun, everyone was ripping, and children of all ages had an amazing time. All the money raised from this incredible event were donated to helping find a cure to a disease doctors know relatively little about.

Hulls which displace

Got a chance to sneak out and surf Chruch yesterday morning with my good friend Boston. Both rode displacement hulls. His is a seven something and mine is about six-two. If you haven't got a chance to ride one, you're going to want to try it. Pretty fun in down the line quick surf.

Surfing after the rain

With all the recent rain, I've decided to stay out of the water for a few days. Found this on Surfline . . .

Since the storm season is upon us here in California: What types of infections/diseases am I exposing myself to by surfing after or during the rain? I've heard that you can get Hepatitis, are there any other dangers? Is it worth it to get vaccinated for some of these diseases to lessen the risks?

The Anti-Engery Drink?

With all the disgusting energy drinks that are out on the market now, I found this new product amazing. It's called Drank, the Anti-Energy Drink, and it looks like the best product ever made. I can't wait to try it . . .
"There is a new beverage gaining popularity in the South, especially Houston, called Drank. Not content with following the herd of energy drinks, Drank is the antithesis of such products, claiming to be "the anti-energy drink" whose slogan is "slow your roll." This purple carbonated beverage is infused with melatonin, valerian root and rose hips which give it a sedating effect. Details, inside...

Drank anti-energy drink finds its roots in "purple drank," a slang term for a concoction popularized in the South by the hip-hop community, according to Wikipedia. Purple drank typically includes promethazine-codeine cough syrup which produces a stoned sedation. Promethazine is an antihistamine while codeine is an opiate narcotic. The syrup is colored purple hence "Purple drank."

However, Drank's active ingredients are all legal, and can be found at health and vitamin shops. Drank's press release says, "From design to production, every aspect of this calming drink was inspired by today’s popular hip hop artists who embrace the much sought-after hip hop lifestyle that encourages people to capture a stress-free state of mind."

If there can be a Cocaine Energy Drink with no cocaine, we suppose there can be Drank with no powerful pharmaceuticals. However, given the active ingredients, we're guessing that Drank will do little more than make you sleepy. But if taking naps is what is considered hip-hop nowadays, we're sure that Drank will be a runaway success."
